BNP Promises New Government by Sunday
"The government will be formed by Feb. 15. The BNP will go to parliament with all parties," stated the party’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday while visiting his constituency in the north-western Thakurgaon district.
BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman is expected to serve as the party’s prime ministerial nominee. He assumed leadership of the party after the passing of his mother and Bangladesh’s first female prime minister, Khaleda Zia, in December.
“It will be the BNP’s government. And BNP will implement its election promises and manifesto, as well as the issues that BNP signed in the July Charter on reforms will be implemented step by step,” he added.
In addition to the general election, citizens also voted in a referendum on the “July Charter,” which was adopted last October and proposes constitutional reforms, earning overwhelming public approval.
The charter contains more than 80 measures designed to reform governance, including imposing term limits for the prime minister, increasing presidential powers, safeguarding judicial independence, boosting women’s representation, and expanding fundamental rights.
Under the Constitution, a party must secure 151 seats in the 300-seat parliament to form a government. The BNP and its coalition captured 212 seats in Thursday’s election, while their main rival, a coalition led by Jamaat-e-Islami, won 77 seats.
